Why Re-Wax Your Jacket

Every Brixtol Textiles waxed cotton garment is built to last. Over time and through regular wear, the protective wax layer naturally begins to fade when exposed to rain, wind, and daily friction. Our Re-Wax Service restores the protection and extends the life of your garment for years to come.

Waxed cotton is designed to age beautifully, but to maintain its water-repellent performance, the fabric occasionally needs to be reproofed. Re-waxing restores the protective surface while preserving the unique character your jacket develops over time.

How It Works

We re-wax your garment using our own Reproofing Wax, developed in collaboration with Halley Stevensons — world-leading manufacturers of waxed and waterproof fabrics. Each garment is treated carefully by hand, ensuring attention to detail and an even finish.

How to Wax Your Jacket

Treating cotton with wax is a traditional method of making the fabric water-repellent, and it also makes the garment last considerably longer. The protective layer wears off over time as the jacket is exposed to rain, wind and friction, but it is easily restored at home with Reproofing Wax, which works on both wet and dry wax.

You will need

One tin of reproofing wax, a stiff brush, two dish sponges, a bowl of hot water, a bowl of cold or room-temperature water, and a hairdryer.

Step by step

  1. Warm the wax. Place the tin in a bowl of very hot water until the wax softens. Cold wax is difficult to work with and is one of the most common reasons for an uneven result.
  2. Brush the jacket. Remove all dirt, dust and loose fibres with a brush.
  3. Wipe it down. Dampen a sponge in cold or room-temperature water and go over the garment, then brush off any remaining dirt.
  4. Apply the wax. Dip a second, clean sponge into the tin and work the wax into the fabric in long, even strokes. Keep working the same area until the wax no longer looks white on the fabric — that is your indication that the amount is right.
  5. Heat the surface. Go over the jacket slowly with a hairdryer on a warm setting. You will see the wax sink into the fabric, and the heat also evens out any areas where you have applied a little too much.
  6. Let it rest. Hang the jacket to dry for 24 hours at room temperature before wearing it.

Are there any areas that need extra attention?

The whole garment should be waxed, but seams and cuffs are easy to miss and are worth going over carefully. Avoid the collar and any corduroy details, and there is no need to wax the inside of the pockets.

How do I know when I have applied enough?

When the wax no longer appears white on the fabric.

Any tips for an even finish?

Work the sponge over the same area several times rather than trying to cover it in one pass, and do not skip the hairdryer step — the heat is what settles the wax into the fabric and evens out the finish.

How do I care for the jacket between waxings?

Do not wash or steam the garment. If it gets dirty, simply rub the area with water. Never use soap or detergent.

How often should I re-wax?

Every one to two years, depending on how often you wear it. It is not a requirement — some prefer the drier, more worn-in look that develops over time.
